How Soldiers who opened fire on us, killed two, shattered man’s penis — Enugu Neighbourhood Watch

The people of Eke Community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State have alleged the killing of a volunteer member of its neighborhood vigilante watch and a housewife from the community by soldiers.

Emeka Anigbo, Assistant Chief Security Officer of Eke Security Neighborhood Vigilante Watch, narrated the incident to newsmen.

Anigbo, who is still grieving over gunshot pain, said they were at 9th Mile Corner on Thursday night when they got a distress call.

He said the caller told them that armed robbers blocked the major road leading to the popular Catholic Church Prayer Center (Ugwudinso) and Eke, from Ama Breweries.

According to him, on receiving the distress call, they swiftly drove out with a view to confronting the criminal elements, but due to heavy traffic gridlock occasioned by the blockage of the road, they could not get to the scene with their vehicle.

He said they (vigilante group) decided to park their vehicle along the road and started moving towards the place.

He said while approaching the scene, they met three armed soldiers who ordered them to stop.

Anigbo added: “We obeyed the soldiers and identified ourselves as neighbourhood vigilante watch guards.

“The soldiers asked us to keep coming.

“On approaching, the soldiers started firing at us, killing one of us and a woman who was on a motorcycle with her husband going back to Eke community.

“Despite the fact that we were in our full security uniforms and had identified ourselves, the trigger-happy soldiers opened fire on us at a very close range, killing Oke and the woman.

“After shooting me severally, while I was on the ground, one of the soldiers still, notwithstanding seeing my identification card and my uniform, went ahead to shoot me again on the shoulder.”

Anigbo said that it was the timely arrival of operatives from 9th Mile Corner Police Division that saved his life, adding it was the police that stopped the soldier and confirmed that we are Eke Neighborhood Security Guards.

He alleged that the soldiers equally shot three other members of the local security outfit at close range, leaving them with various degrees of bullet injuries, including one whose penis was completely shattered.

“It is unfortunate that Mr. Ebuka Oke, shot during the barbaric attack by the soldiers, lost his father exactly one month on the same day he was killed,” he said.

Efforts to speak with Chinedu Okolo, whose manhood was shattered, failed as he could not utter a word due to severe pains, just as the third victim, Obinna Offor, was passing through excruciating pains under oxygen support at the intensive care unit of a hospital.

Some natives of Eke community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, condemned the unprofessional conducts of the soldiers, describing it as “barbaric and callous”, while calling for independent investigation.

When contacted, Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, described as untrue the narrative of the community people and its vigilante arm.

Unuakhalu said that from the available information at the Division’s disposal, the deceased woman was killed by a stray bullet from armed hoodlums who engaged the soldiers in a shootout.

He said that the troops received a distress call that some criminal elements were operating along the Eke Road and they immediately rushed to the scene.

He said on sighting the soldiers, the hoodlums opened fire on them.

He noted that the soldiers overpowered them, leading to the arrest of one of them and recovering of two pump action guns and some live bullets, after some ran into a nearby bush.

The Division’s spokesman said he had no information regarding the alleged second deceased (the male).

He added that it was in the course of the exchange of fire between the troop and the hoodlums that a stray bullet hit the deceased housewife who was rushed to the hospital, “but unfortunately, later died.

“So, there is no iota of truth in the information being peddled around that it was soldiers that killed the deceased (female).

“Our men only rushed to the scene to salvage the situation, after receiving a distress call.”

Unuakhalu noted that it was unfortunate that the woman died, if not, she would have been in the best position to narrate exactly what happened.

“The Division is going to carry out proper investigation on the incident, so as to unravel what actually transpired,” he said.

Eke community is the hometown of the Director General of the Voice of Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu, and immediate past Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.

2023 Hajj: NAHCON releases details of airlift of Nigerian pilgrims back home

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria on Sunday night announced that the airlift of Nigerian pilgrims back to home from Saudi Arabia, where they partook in this year’s Hajj would begin on July 4.

The Head of Aviation Matters of NAHCON, Engineer Mohammed Goni Sanda, made the announcement at the post-Arafah meeting held in Makkah.

According to Engr. Sanda, pilgrims would be airlifted back home in the order they were airlifted to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the hajj.

He said the “criteria of first in, first out” would be strictly adhered to during the evacuation exercise.

The Head of Aviation Matters said all the air carriers were ready for the evacuation.

Sanda, however, said that the Saudi Arabia authorities didn’t allow air carriers to airlift pilgrims to their maximum capacity because of heavy traffic at the airport.

He said: “We have over two million pilgrims.

“All of them want to go back to their countries.

“Therefore, the airlifts have to be staggered to accommodate all.”

Engr. Sanda said Nigeria couldn’t be given six slots a day to airlift the pilgrims.

He said: “This is just for this week and next week.

“After next week, all our air carriers are free to fly at maximum capacity.”

He stated further that Saudi Arabia had just introduced “movement back to Nigeria through Madinah.”

According to him, most of the Nigerian pilgrims came into Saudi Arabia through Madinah, taking them back to Madinah, while they could just return home via Jeddah, would be stressful.

He promised to contact necessary Saudi authorities to get the matter resolved.

On when each pilgrim would go back to Nigeria, Engr. Sanda said: “Ask yourself when did l come to Saudi Arabia?

“Have l stayed up to 40 days?

“Then minus three days or plus three days from 40 days, you will arrive at the answer.”

Speaking further, the Head of Aviation Matters said zamzam water had already been taken to Nigeria waiting for collection by the pilgrims on arrival.

FG disconnects discos from national grid over debt

The Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Market Operator have begun a massive disconnection of debtor electricity distribution companies from the national grid over debt.

This came after notices of disconnection from the grid served on some of the Discos by the Market Operator. Punch reported that the MO, a division of the Transmission Company of Nigeria had informed some Discos, including generating companies of the disconnection plan, due to failure to make remittances of ancillary services bills.

After a 60 days extension of the grace period following an intervention by the Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, the market defaulters were expected to comply with the provisions of the Market Rules with respect to payment of their outstanding invoices, posting of adequate bank guarantees, and forwarding of their active Power Purchase Agreements as the case may be, to the MO/TCN.

Discos and Gencos listed among defaulters by the Market Operators included; Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Benin Electricity Distribution Company, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, Ikeja Electric, Jos Electricity Distribution Company, Kaduna Electric, Kano Electricity Distribution Company, Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, APL Electric Company Aba, Ajaokuta Steel Company- a special electricity customer. The defaulting Gencos are Niger Delta Power Holding Company plants and Paras Energy.

Following the development, IBEDC Managing Director/CEO, Kingsley Achife has already announced that there would be a mass disconnection from the national grid following poor remittances by customers. The action may result in power outages to customers within the IBEDC franchise areas, especially locations with the highest population of defaulters.

Areas to be affected by the mass disconnection are Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara, and parts of Niger, Ekiti and Kogi states.
