Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested four persons for extorting money from motorists in the state while posing as members of the Removal of Abandoned Vehicles Committee.
The Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command made this known in a statement it issued on Friday.
Those arrested were Taiwo Falodun, who is popularly known as Biggy (48), Adedire Olaniyi (42), Femi Osunkoya (53) and Olalekan Edu (51).
Two of the suspects: Adedire and Osunkoya, were apprehended on May 26, 2022 after they impounded the vehicle of a motorist for allegedly changing lanes in Alausa, Ikeja.
The motorist stated that the suspects took her vehicle to a park in from of the Elephant Cement House, where she was asked to pay a fine of N50,000.
The motorist however reached out to a friend who contacted the Rapid Response Squad.
The RRS operatives, who arrived promptly at the scene, arrested the suspects and commenced preliminary investigation.
During investigation, Falodun, identified as the leader of the team, came along with a government official who identified himself as Olalekun Edu to solicit the release of the arrested suspects.
The RRS operatives, who discovered them as crooks, detained them due to information regarding their positions.
On the RRS finger print records, Falodun and Olaniyi were once arrested in 2020 for extortion on a University professor while posing as Local Government Officials on LASU-Igando Road.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alabi, has directed the Commander of the RRS, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, to charge the suspects to court at the conclusion of investigation.
