10 killed, 15 injured in Plateau auto crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Plateau State Command, has confirmed the death of 10 persons and 15 others injured after an articulated vehicle rammed into six vehicles on Jos-Bauchi Highway.

An eyewitness said the accident occurred at about 8pm yesterday in the Zakalio/Babale area of the road.

The source said a truck conveying goods to the northeast of the country suddenly lost control as a result of mechanical problem and rammed into several vehicles.

Ten persons died on the spot, the eyewitness said, adding that the incident caused a traffic snarl as residents tried to rescue those trapped in the affected vehicles.

Sector Commander of the FRSC Alphonso Godwin, who confirmed the accident, said the truck driver was underage.

He said the truck rammed into several vehicles and caused multiple accidents, adding that the injured were admitted at Toro medical centre while the dead were deposited at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital in Jos.

Godwin advised truck owners to maintain their vehicles, monitor their drivers and desist from giving out trucks to underage persons.

“The vehicles were in motion when the underage driver lost control and rammed into moving vehicles, squeezing them.

“Investigation showed that the brake of the truck failed, resulting in it smashing into six vehicles from the rear and leading to the death of 10 people,” he said.
